I was browsing the IMDB Brokeback Mountain page earlier today only to come across some things so appalling I just needed to share them, these are all in response to an article someone posted in which Heath Ledger called the cinema owner in Utah that canceled the showing of the film "immature", not the word I would use but you get the point. (emphasis mine)

"Very immature? For a society to stand up for something they believe in? Why should you support gays if you don't believe in their lifestyle. Obviously you don't attack them, but you sure as hell don't support them. Lets all be sensitive and put aside our beliefs so we don't hurt other peoples feelings. Oh, I'm scared, what if people call me a bigot. Unbeleivable. I'm sick of this oversensitivity. Its Millers theatre, he can do what he wants. End of discussion. Lets admit it, people who support gay lifestyles are just moving closer to embracing that lifestyle themselves. Tolerance, yes. But not at the expense of moral beliefs. I'm going to go throw away my Knight's Tale DVD now"

At least that person can string a sentence together...

"...Also it's obvious God is real, when people think they are gay it's in their heads not their hearts. Satan is putting his mind into theirs tricking them, it's called temptation. I may not believe in the ways of them but I will still be friend them because I don't judge a friend by what they do or any of that. I am just stating an obvious fact that there is no way in hell evolution is real. I think that it's obvious a man and woman belong together on so many levels. One might think they're gay but they're really not, it's the society making people think they are."

Don't you all wish you had friends like this?

"im glad they did it. The movie is very impressonable. It could make kids and whoever think that being gay is alright, when it is not. That is the most unnatural thing that goes on with humans, even more so than substance abuse. One thing makes me feel better....that they will infact not breed and multiply, but they will multiply not by breeding, but by society gradually accepting it. Im not saying prison, rights and all that. Im saying we should acknowledge it as wrong. Gladly, about 70% of america is against gay marriage."

...Yeah.

My response right now is simply "..." some people make my head hurt. I don't think I need to say anything, I guess these speak for themselves pretty well.

Sadly, I have a friend who shares their beliefs, and is becoming more vocal about it. :S I suppose it's partly retaliation for me and [livejournal.com profile] domasdiar being so open about slash and our support of gay people in school. But still. I use my R/S icon especially because of her.

... Could we perhaps come up with some way of stopping these people from breeding?

I say we need quotations from the Phaedrus dialogue to wave at them whenever they start picketing things with 'God Hates Fags' signs.

'Yeah, well, Socrates says gay people go to heaven and all you disgusting breeders are no better than animals, and are going to wander hell forever as shades!!!!'

While I fully support the equal-rights agenda, and hate these particular people, not all heterosexuals are like that, and there isn't actually anything wrong, and certainly nothing disgusting, with wanting to be part of a heterosexual relationship which may involve children at some point.

(Of course I don't believe this - I hasten to explain, because I know plenty of quite lovely straight people ohgod this is going so wrong - all I mean is: here is an equally extreme argument from an equally respected source, saying quite the obvious. So it really can't be that obvious, can it?)

Of course when I say 'quite the obvious' I mean 'quite the opposite'. *facepalm*

Oh thank God, I was getting very scared then, and wrote the gently worded reply I could to the effect of... umm, we're not all bad, really. Me and Nick are both nice, in fact

*puts hands over face* Ohgod I am so sorry; it occurred to me about three seconds after I'd pressed 'send' that I hadn't really made it clear that I wasn't, you know. Endorsing this wild extremism. It was merely an example. You and Nick are lovely, and of course there's nothing wrong with being straight. That's who you are. What's wrong is that anyone should want to prevent you from being who you are.

Yes! I have the perfect solution, make them watch a Queer as Folk marathon, after which they will all obviously turn gay themselves as clearly that's how it works and voila!

I am just stating an obvious fact that there is no way in hell evolution is real.

Dear God, wtf. Says it all really - what the hell does evolution have to do with gays?

I know these people exist, but every time I see evidence of their views, my brain once more fails to cope with the reality of said existence.

It's just... deeply upsetting to me that a part of my sexual nature is apparently so abhorrent to people. Why is it so important to them that I only date and sleep with men?

I really think that these people have to be stopped from breeding and polluting the earth further.

Only reading these posts makes me sick in my stomach. Disgusting.

What really pisses me off is what they were doing on the Brokeback boards in the first place, why would they be there if they haven't seen the film/will not see the film, at one point I even thought it was a joke. I couldn't believe people like that existed.

i know i don't comment often but i read these and just had too.

I'd love to tell the second person

"Um yes, you beleive a man in the sky is telling you what to do and somehow you find this less strange than a person trying to stick a penis in a hole. This scares me."

it always struck me as strange that if someone hears voices in their head they are shuffled off to an institution - but if someone thinks a big man in the sky is telling them what to do it is considered perfectly normal :)

Hope you're surviving with bust internal organs :)

Oh, so difficult to choose my favourite statement here. How about:

"That is the most unnatural thing that goes on with humans, even more so than substance abuse."

Well, I know that lots of animals endulge in gay sex of one sort or another. And some have even been known to deliberately eat food with a narcotic effect. So what is the most common unnatural thing we humans do? Well, after careful thought, I've decided that it must be wearing clothes. No other species does it, but everyone on earth is at it. It's disgusting and perverted, I tell you. So stop it.

As for "Lets admit it, people who support gay lifestyles are just moving closer to embracing that lifestyle themselves," now I'm worried. Eewww, I might catch the gay!
