On Smut

Greetings! I have been thinking quite a lot recently on the subject of smut in fandom, it is certainly popular, one has to only look at the communities like pornish_pixies and the hundreds of people that are listed as watchers. For the sake of the argument I will only talk about slash and the Harry Potter fandom, because I know more about these, not that I know that much, but still.

People read it, people don't, some call it smut, others PWP or simply porn, it's basically detailed, explicit sexual scenes, some very short on plot, others as a part of a huge epic. I don't mind reading smut, but the honest truth is that most sex scenes I find a bit boring, I don't skip them or anything, (I have an irrational fear of skipping anything) but I ceratinly don't enjoy it. Some are too mechanical, not enough feelings are involved, others are lovely but just a bit too long, I suck at explaining but I rarely find a PWP that I 've wanted to reread. What I seem to seek out are fics with forplay, I don't care how hot the sex is, I love long dialogue beforehand that tells me why these two (or more if the case be) people want to have sex. I am a sucker for the stories that show the aftereffects of the sex, and especially when the relaionship is discovered by people that disaprove.

There are some that I enjoy, they contain specific kinks that I am rather fond of, but will not be discussing right now *g*. So what are your views on reading smut, do you have specific pairings? Tell me anything at all. (My pairings are H/D and H/S at the moment, but I wouldn't say no to a H/D/S hehe)

Then there is the writing, I for some reason keep attempting to write smut. I don't necessarily plan it, it just sort of happens. However I rarely finish it, it is like in reading, the flirting, the metaphorical dancing of the characters that I love writing, and then I reach the point where the sex should be and I lose interest. It is no longer anything that new, it's predictable and I need serious discipline to write it. anna_bonita may remember that H/s that I wrote which I really did like and which died together with everything else on my computer, It never reached the sex.(It wasn't finished) It was still pretty hot even if you hate the pairing, despite the lack of physical contact between Harry and Severus. I seem to concentrate on the feelings a bit too much and I take ages to get to the sex, even if it is necessary for the climax (no pun intended) of the fic. For example I am writing a Lucius/Severus fic, when they are both in school, it is at least 2000 words (not sure, written on paper) and no sex yet. I will finsh it though! And then there is the Big One, which I have planned and which I love, despite only having written a draft first chapter. It will potentially have a lot of sex, it is an integral part of the plot and the consequences of it are dealt with, and what if I can't write it?

Ok, sorry for that, I will end it here before it turning into a rant. Once again, comment, speak, anything.

I'd rather not have too much smut really. You know me, i'm more of the fluffy type. I generally prefer everything beforehand, but i'll never say no to some good smut.

Why would you think i skip the smut anyway, i mean especially if its a really good fic no way in hell would i skip it. But then again it might be a good fic butt if i don't particularly like the pairing then i won't particularly appreciate the smut.
