Heroes WTF?

katiaI have a question about Heroes, because in my excitement yesterday I forgot to ask.
Everyone is asking why did Nathan had to fly Peter, couldn't he have flown by himself? And I think that no, he couldn't have done anything, he even says so, this thing was completely controlling him and so he couldn't fly.
Fair enough.
However, why couldn't Claire just shoot him??
Maybe I am missing something but, seriously, what the fuck? He would have survived a shot and Nathan would be alive (not that he is dead now!) If he didn't survive a shot then he would sure as hell not have survived exploding. But as we know from 5 years gone, Peter does survive exploding, therefore he clearly would survive being shot.
The only possible response is that shooting him would not have stopped the explosion. But no one actually says so, and why would that be?
The actual scene goes something like this:
Claire is pointing the gun at Peter, but she can't do it
Peter: There is no other way.
Nathan flies in: Yes there is.
This to me implies that there is no other way but for Peter to be shot dead. And then Nathan says that there is another way which is for them both to die and for some reason that is the right way. Serious WTF moment.
