Skins and an MSc

So I made the mistake last Monday to sit down while my brother was watching Skins and I’d heard about it and knew I’d probably like it, so kept telling myself I have no time for a new show. Well one episode and I was hooked, instead of revising I ended up watching all the episodes and I love it. It is odd, and I think very much a fannish characteristic to get really easily obsessed with things, once you are in fandom and a fan of something, this enthusiasm gets transferred to everything else you like. Normal people that like Skins would probably watch it once a week and occasionally discuss it with friends. A fannish person would watch it in a day, watch all the extras/interviews/etc, join the LJ comms dedicated to it and probably read a fic or two. Oh dear, I don’t have time for this.

Do any of you watch it?? What do you think?

It is weird because I had heard that it was gritty and a realistic portrayal of teenagers etc, to which I say bullshit, it is ridiculously exaggerated and all the characters are clichés and the plot is completely mad most of the time and despite all of that it is a wonderful show.

The episode I saw first was the Chris one in Season 2 and I love Chris, he is such a good guy, the insane amount of drugs and his complete lack of responsibility aside he is a good friend and very devoted. I am so happy he got with Jal and I really think she is good influence on him.

As for Jal she was my favourite for a while because she is the most normal one and people think she is boring but I think she is lovely and sensible and still fun but I really wish she got more to do, it’s seems like they don’t really know what to do with her half the time. I am not a big fan of the pregnancy story, it’s just been done too much and I don’t like that it’s Jal the good girl that had to get pregnant. It seem too much like a punishment.

Sid I first of all felt sorry for, the whole being in love with your best friend’s beautiful girlfriend thing is pretty sad, but then he was so utterly awful to Cassie and no one should be awful to her and then I got annoyed with him, but I can see he tries and he is one of those people that things generally go wrong for.

Cassie is wonderful, I just want to give her a hug all the time, I have no idea how realistic the portrayal of her anorexia is, but I think her feelings are very well expressed and very real. She is like a fairy creature from out of this world and I wish people would appreciate her brightness more. Also I love all her clothes and her sunglasses and the way she speaks. I find the ‘oh wow’s utterly adorable. Sid better love her and stop breaking her heart soon.

Michelle I have little to say about, I really don’t want her to get back with Tony because without him she was starting to look/behave like an autonomous individual which was nice to see. Yeah she is hot, but the shallowness and obsession with an arsehole of a boyfriend is really sad. Unless Tony’s recent niceness sticks, but even then I am not sure I want them back together. And definitely not with Sid.

Anwar is my least favourite from the main cast, his hypocrisy and obsession with girls and sex is just tiring, I do find him pretty funny though.

Maxxie, oh my god, he is embodiment of fanon Draco and that was pretty much enough to consolidate my love. He looks like the image of Draco I’ve always had in my head and never thought I would ever see in reality. Looks aside (believe me that is difficult to do, because he really is pretty) he is such a lovely character. I am so glad that there is more of him in season 2. I love how he is who he is and he is completely unapologetic about it, the fact that his gayness is not a big deal at all and everyone accepts him, the fact that he wouldn’t go to Anwar’s birthday until Anwar told his dad he is gay and he looked after Tony more than even Sid. He is such a wonderful friend and dancer. And did I mention pretty? No wonder he had an obsessive stalker, but he could have been a tiny bit nicer to the girl, sure, she was creepy and violent but also in love with him, and he was so mean.

Tony. Wow Tony, I am amazed at the complexity of his character. He is fascinating, his behaviour in season 1 was appalling. But like he often says ‘fun’. The way he manipulated everyone around him and always came out on top, the way he used sex to always get what he wanted (Apart from Maxxie, though I do like the sexual fluidity hinted at, even if it was mostly about power) well it was bound to collapse beneath him at some point and in did in a very nicely real way, I think. People weren’t going to take his crap forever. The bus thing was harsh but I guess it gave the writers a whole new character to play with this season and I love new Tony. The last ep was fantastic, I am pretty much sure it was mostly a dream, but it was so surreal and so well executed. I loved the end too, the surprise Sid kiss and the double I love yous.

So yeah, these were just my brief thoughts and I don’t have time to talk about everyone’s families, though the craziness there is tenfold. In conclusion, yay Skins!

In other shiny news, I got an offer from my second choice at the LSE, which is an MSc in Theory of International Relations and which I would love to do, the actual difference with the IR course is very minimal, and it comes down to a compulsory theory paper, all other options are the same. And I only need a 2:1! (though had a nightmare the other day that I got a 2:2) Now I need to work during the summer as the LSE is crazy expensive.

Oh yay! I'm looking forward to catching up with Skins in the holidays (um, I mean revise. Yes.) as both you and [livejournal.com profile] song43 are obsessing about it. Watched a few episodes of Season One but haven't seen this series yet. Jal and Cassie were my favourites and I knew you'd love Maxxie! Think he's in this series a lot more because the fan reaction to his prettiness was so great. Tony mostly scares me because I can't get over the kid from About A Boy growing up.

Congratulations again! You rock. :D

Yay you should watch it all! I didn't know you'd seen any of it actually, not that I am surprised. :D Can't decide whether I prefer Skins or Nearly Famous!

Hee, I love that Tony is the kid from About A boy, because I love that film and him in it, the scene where he sings Killing me Softly is one of my favourite moments of film ever! And where he killed that duck with bread!

Haha, yes, I am the shallow one on your flist. Skins is probably the better show, but NF caters for all my weaknesses. So yeah. I'll try and catch up now that it's the holidays.

I don't condone duck killing but that was an amazing scene. :D

There is a new Skins ep tonight, I am so excited, I will leave the library early in order to watch it! :D

Nothing wrong with a little shallowness! I am not sure why Skins is seen as 'better', it is not realistic or gritty or anything like that!

Congratulations on LSE! That's fab.

i'm sorry but i HATE cassie! she was such a cow last week with Chris and Angie, so selfish, and throwing that party, aaaaaaaaaaargh. Plus yes Sid was pretty harsh to her but she should have explained about the gay boys, i would have reacted in exactly the same way!

Tony is my favourite, he's amazing. And Sketch is such a great new character.

Hehe, fair enough, I agree that she wasn't fair to Chris and Jal and as this was the first episode I watched initially I wasn't too fond of her either, (she seemed like a crazy bitch) but when I watched everything else I couldn't but love her. Her behaviour is pretty excusable when you consider what she'd been through and the way Sid treated her again and again.

I am not sure if I love Tony, but I agree that he is amazing! Did you see the last ep? Do you think it was all a dream? I am so confused!
