It finishes on them flying into the Northern Lights (literally) in the flying ship thingie (words fail me atm) to find her father, and Lyra looks at the compass, smiles and then says "I'm bringing him what he needs" with the obvious implication that it's the Compass - rather than, uhm, Roger. I'm probably unqualified since I haven't read the books yet, but it didn't seem hideously saccarine, though I can understand how leaving the cliffhanger out would irk people who've read the books.
