Maths is not essential, but it is really helpful to have done it, especially in your first year, when you do economics and there is a compulsory maths part in the exam. However, if she is not planning to study economics beyond first year and she is very good at the other two, then it should be okay. There are a few people who did not do maths for A-level, though having an A* for GCSE is then really important. And she will find economics really difficult without a background in maths, so I really do recommend trying to do at least the AS.
